Localized soft elasticity in liquid crystal elastomers
Synthetic approaches to prepare designer materials that localize deformation, by combining rigidity and compliance in a single material, have been widely sought. Bottom-up approaches, such as the self-organization of liquid crystals, offer potential advantages over top-down patterning methods such as photolithographic control of crosslink density, relating to the ease of preparation and fidelit...
متن کاملA Numerical Investigation on Configurational Distortions in Nematic Liquid Crystals
When subjected to magnetic or electric fields, nematic liquid crystals confined between two parallel glass plates and initially uniformly oriented may undergo homogeneous one-dimensional spatial distortions (Fréedericksz and Zolina, Trans. Faraday Soc. 29:919, 1933) or periodic distortions (Lonberg and Meyer, Phys. Rev. Lett. 55(7):718–721, 1985; and Srajer et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 67(9):1102–1...
متن کاملElasticity in crystals under pressure.
The elastic behavior and stability of elemental crystals are studied in the neighborhood of a stable equilibrium state, also called a phase, at finite pressure p. It is shown that two kinds of elastic constants are needed to describe elasticity under pressure. One set, designated as c(ij),i,j = 1-6, determines stability or lack of it; another set, designated as c(ij)(p), describes the linear re...
متن کاملEffect of director distortions on morphologies of phase separation in liquid crystals.
We study phase separation from a nematic liquid crystal with spatially nonuniform director gradients. Particles of a phase-separated component, which is either an isotropic fluid (silicone oil) or a nonmesogenic photopolymer, accumulate in the regions with the strongest director distortions, thus reducing the overall energy of the system.
متن کاملCompetition of elasticity and flexoelectricity for bistable alignment of nematic liquid crystals on patterned substrates.
We show that patterned surfaces can promote bistable configurations of nematics for reasons other than the symmetry of the surface. Numerical and analytical calculations reveal that a nematic liquid crystal in contact with a striped surface is subject to the competing aligning influences of elastic anisotropy, differing energy cost of various types of deformation, and flexoelectricity, curvatur...
